As admitted fall protection safety fanatics, we are constantly searching for better ways our equipment can protect people when working at height. Our objective is to meet or exceed the latest ANSI standards while providing maximum comfort and operational efficiency.  

We set out to discover a better way for a personal leading-edge SRL to be comfortable to wear and meet ANSI Z359.14-2021 Class 2 leading-edge standard, which goes into effect February 2023. We created an ergonomic design that streamlined the portion of the SRL’s profile that rests on our user's back. This design minimizes the distance between the harness back D-ring attachment point and the retractables axis point. This design enables the SRL to sit higher on the user's back providing for a natural working position.  This helps to relieve the back from stress and pain. We also invented EdgeCore^TM, which provides line constituent edge protection strength and toughness while reducing the weight by 40% compared to steel cable. Because the FT-X^TM has a low profile, high and tight position, and EdgeCore^TM, you just might forget you are wearing it when working at height.  

The Story behind EdgeCore^TM 

Our mission was to create a groundbreaking lifeline that was not only lighter and more pliant than wire rope but maintain the durability and robustness of steel. EdgeCore^TM is the result.

EdgeCore^TM is not a webbing, it is a unique SRL line constituent comprised of Kevlar^® cables combined with a UV-resistant composite structure that are engineered and tested to meet ANSI Z359.14-2021 requirements. EdgeCore’s flexibility and low profile makes for a small, robust, and smooth gliding FT-X^TM leading edge retractable enabling optimum walking-working speeds. The strength of steel wire rope without its weight; this is the versatility of EdgeCore^TM.

Can I use EdgeCore^TM when working near a leading-edge?  

Yes, when used in accordance with the FT-X^TM User Instructions and applicable ANSI standards. Indeed, we ran the whole gamut of stringent ANSI Z359.14-2021 required leading-edge tests on the 8’ FT-X^TM EdgeCore^TM in our FallTech ISO 17025 accredited test lab.  The tests require that we use a sharpened steel edge with a radius of .005 or sharper, and that's razor blade sharp.  Beyond the scope and requirements of ANSI Z359, we have also successfully tested the 8’ FT-X^TM EdgeCore^TM over abrasive concrete edges. Can you provide proof that EdgeCore^TM meets ANSI Z359.14-2021 leading-edge requirements?

Absolutely. The ANSI Z359 declaration of conformity (DOC) and test report for all 8’ FT-X^TM EdgeCore^TM units are available for review. We have for many years published the ANSI DOC with test reports on our website for all to view and download. No log-in is required, and they are on the product page in the right-side downloads section.  

Is it true that after use, if a twin 8’ FT-X EdgeCore retractable does not pass inspection, I can replace just the retractable in the field with a replacement unit and continue working?

With SpeedLink^TM yes, you can. SpeedLink^TM is an industry-first personal SRL innovation. Any 8’ FT-X^TM EdgeCore^TM twin retractable unit that does not pass inspection for any reason, such as a damaged or worn lifeline, can be replaced in the field. Unit must be inspected by a Competent Person before returning to service.
